tax question?
tax question?
i have been living in washington state for the past several years, I work as a merchant marine all over the world. Washington is good there is no state income tax. I am thinking of moving to maine, will i have to pay taxes on what Ive already earned this year while i wasnt a resident of maine? Doesnt seem fair if I do. I was thinking of getting a part time job while I am in maine, then shipping out again towards the end of the year. Will i have to pay taxes on the income from the job in maine?

Brandi K: You will not have to pay state taxes on what is already earned. You will have to pay on what you earn from that point forward. Check on property taxes, some states have that and some do not. I live in SC and we pay taxes on our home, car, and any other propety ie) RV, boat, land, ATV, etc.

You will pay income tax on all income earned during that period of time... If you do not change your primary residence to Maine but rather keep it in Washington, then you will file a Non-Resident tax form and will only have to pay tax on the money you actually earned in Maine (the part time job you mentioned) Hope this helps...

sarge927: Under Federal law, no state can tax you for income made while you were a resident of another state. Once you become a Maine resident, however, you will definitely have to pay taxes on any income you make while a resident (assuming you're working in Maine), and they may have different rules regarding your income as a merchant marine.
