federal income tax questions?
MY husband and I have filed jointly for the 4 years that we have been married. Do we need to file jointly this year or can we file seperately?

Answers:

Cat:  It's entirely up to the two of you. You may file either way. If you're smart (and you're getting along with each other), you'll file the way that saves you the most money.

pusherhombre:  Either or, it is up to you. MFJ will give you more favorable tax treatment and we always recommend it. You still have that option if you divorced this year or your spouse dies. Usually the only people who file MFS are folks going through a divorce where one spouse makes the majority of the income and does not want the other to know, even though they will pay higher taxes. But what you paid is usually discovered in the divorce case anyway and used to determine support.
