Can I get a tax refund in japan and other tax questions?
I'm in japan on a 1 year working visa, but am leaving after being here for 6 months. I'm enrolled in nhi and I have one dependent. Other than the income tax, I've read that I am not liable for the city or municipal taxes since i havent been here for a year yet. Is this true? Am I eligible for a return on the income taxes I have paid, I am a us citizen so there is a tax treaty in place. If I am elgible, what do I have to do to get the return? Also, do i need to have any tax information when i leave the country, like a recepit for tax paid or anything when i hand in my gaijin card? thanks a lot

Less than that you have to pay Japanese taxes. If you don't they can do many nasty things like pull your visa or even put you in Jail. I'm not 100 percent shure about all of this so my advice is to go to http://www.japan.survival-links.com and click the link "paying taxes" and you can also talk to the tax person at the US embasy in Tokyo. At http://www.japan.survival-links.com you can also get the embassy information, location and phone numbers and such. I hope that I have helped.

Joriental:  Not true. Since you will have stayed in Japan more than 180 days when you leave Japan, you need to pay taxes. But usually some part of tax will be refund. You need to file the income tax return at local tax office of your address. Let your Japanese colleague to call the local tax office first. It is the fastest way to understand the system and procedure.
