Child Tax Credit - can you still get help if on a fairly good wage?
Child Tax Credit - can you still get help if on a fairly good wage?
I haven't bothered to apply for Child Tax Credit because my husband's on a fairly good wage (around ?29,000) but I'm a stay at home mum so really what he earns each month goes on bills and cost of living and doesn't go far. We're in debt too from when he was made redundant several years ago. What help could I expect to receive monthly if I applied?
I don't "cadge" off the government and never have - it's not my fault my husband works 6 day weeks to earn that and starts at 2am most days! I'm only taking a temporary career break for my children and have never claimed a penny in benefits so criticise the real spongers who never get off their backsides! We don't smoke, drink or socialise either and buy cheap food, so to those moaning - don't judge. If you're on a poor wage you get a better job then!! Goes to show you ask for advice on here and you get negativity. We've paid tax all our lives so what's wrong with asking for help when you need it?

Daisyhill: I think you get about ?40.00 per week...does he get family tax credit though? If he does then you wont get child tax credit...if he isnt getting it then he should apply now. Its all money and will help pay debt! Plus family tax credit is more than ?40.00 a week and he would still get it on that wage.

asma_k: I'm not too sure about it but I think you'd get about ?500 a year (almost a tenner a week) and that's for one child. You can check if you're eligible for any help by doing their online assessment.

jpgregory2001: You don't have to apply - during tax time read the book, IT will tell you if you qualify

claimbankchargesback: Yes, you can still get help! You can get child tax credit on earnings up to ?60,000.
I can't say how much you`ll get monthly, as it depends on the number of children you have, and also the ages of the children (you get a lot more for a child under 1 year old).
You will definately get something though which is the main thing, so its definately worth claiming. In the end your family has paid tax and national insurance, so you're much more entitled to help than someone who has never worked and just sponged off the state for their whole life (of which there are many!).
I would apply as soon as possible, as you are missing out on money you are entitled to. As long as your husband works 30 hours or more a week, you`ll be fine.
Be totally honest about everything on the application form, as if you lie and get found out, you could find yourself with a big bill to pay back for the money you weren't entitled to. Just fill in everything as accurately as you can and you won't have a problem.
Kids are expensive, and its well worth claiming for the money you are entitled to.

karen b: You don't say how many children you have, so can't be precise.
Child tax credit is made up of elements
Family element ?545 per year per family
Family element (baby under 1 year)?545 per year per family
Child element ?1765 per year per child
Disabled child element ?2350 per year per disabled child
Severely disabled child element ?945 per year in addition to above.
You are entitled to receive the maximum CTC if your income is less than ?14,155 per year, your CTC entitlement is reduced by 37p for every ?1 of income over ?14,155 until you are left with just the family element of CTC (?545). You receive this unless your annual income is ?50,000 or more, in which case the Family element is then reduced by ?1 for every ?15 of income above ?50,00.
Quite complicated, but hope this helps. You should definitely apply.

andrea b: Agree with Karen B answer, went on tax credit seminar few wks ago....very boring but basically it maybe at reduced rate, mine is & earn less than your partner but as long as it below the threshold amount ?58K everything should be hunky dory
Give them a call 0845 3003900 for a form.
Don't bother with everyone else on here slagging you off just because your asking a straight forward question. The worse thing you could do is not claim something your entitled to...their just all jealous but if shoe on other foot they'd claim it like a shot

jopaterson07: it depends on how many kids you have, i think the cut off point is higher than the old family tax credit system. the debt from before wont count in your claim, just how much he earns, how many hours he works and how many children you have. they can back date it up to 3 months as well. give them a phone they are usually quite helpful. dont pay attention to the neg comments on here, you are doing the best you can for your family and if that includes claiming tax credits then do it. remember married man allowance was done away with and this sort of replaces it. i didnt hear people calling folk scroungers when they had a married man allowance.
