Richard M: I'm not sure what an amended return (Form 1040X) has to do with a student loan. In any event, here are the forms an instructions to submit an amended return (Form 1040X): http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf

Rebekah: There are two sources for student loans -- the federal government and private lenders. In order to obtain most federal student loans, you will first need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In mostyou can combine all of your eligible federal student loans into one loan with a Federal Consolidation Loan. Consolidating also locks the interest rate you pay on your loan.

v b: FASFA is requiring an amended return because they believe you made a mistake on the original return. (Most common, claimed your self, or claimed a dependent or filing status you weren't entitled to.)
If your income is low enough (under $39K), go the nearest IRS walkin center for help. The IRS phone line can give you hints but cannot do the form for you.
