zornundox:  like many gov't programs, this is probably a misguided attempt to fix something that probably doesn't need fixing. I have a sinking feeling that the ones profiting from this are the ones donating money to the right elected officials.

Take a couple on Social Security who have a moderate retirement fund on top of that. The can save thousands in taxes by getting a divorce due to the way that Social Security is taxed as 2 singles vs 1 couple. I know 3 couples in this situation who did divorce for that reason. They're still together but pay much less tax. Or a couple with 4 children earning about $25k per year each can save over $7,000 in taxes as 2 singles due to the way that the EIC is paid and the lower tax rates and higher combined standard dection filing as Head of Household. I know one couple who bought a duplex and got divorced. They each file as HoH, claim 2 kids each and nearly max out on the EIC.

.:  No. It's good to give me all my tax dollars back. Taxation is theft.
