A few questions about the accounting profession?
A few questions about the accounting profession?
Do accountants have to work at accounting firms that specialize in accounting, or would other businesses like for example, Yahoo! hire accountants as well?
Are salaries and work load pretty much the same in big four accounting firms compared to mid-size or small accounting firms?
I know that accounting is an EXTREMELY boring subject to study, but is a career in it rewarding?

Bill: Accountants can work for all types of organisation including consultancies. Salaries vary a lot and is generally in line with responsibility.
Rewarding in what way? But, assuming and particular ares such as job satisfaction, salary, etc; it depends entirely on your makeup if you find it rewarding.
Thanks
Bill

Charles K: It's a pretty safe career, but yes, you will probably be bored out of your mind. Traditionally, it's best to work at one of the Big 4s, since it will allow you to move into other fields and companies more readily than being an in-house accountant for a company such as Yahoo. Also, I would surmise that a Big 4 would have a lot more to teach you vs. a regular company. At a Big 4 you will be exposed to a lot more aspects of accounting since they only do accounting (well, consulting is also done at the Big 4 but that's a totally different division altogether).
The only reason I see in working at a business, i.e. Yahoo, would be if you intend to move to other areas within the company and wish to use the accounting position to just get you into the company.
