401k question. how do i go about finding info on if my employer paid into my account?
i recently lost my job after 15 yrs. i was told that i was owed 401k. i never paid into a 401k but i was told my employer had to have paid into mine. profit sharing. how do i go about finding out if he did. i need all the input i can get on this. so thank you in advance for your help.

w1ld w1ll1e: contact your previous employer's human resources department and ask if they can supply you with a statement of your 401k account. if they do provide one for you, or have whoever is maintaining it for you (groups such as vanguard or fidelity) do so, you will know how much you have in it, how it is invested , etc. you may not want to leave it where it is, most employers will allow you to roll it over into their plan, if they have one. you have to be careful to do this in a timely fashion, as there are penalties for missing deadlines, and the tax bite can be painful.

Doctor Deth: if you never contributed anything yourself, then your employer probably did not either - they usually only match if you contribute - you would have been receiving at least quarterly statements from the 401 k company - talk to your company's benefits administrator/HR person
