tax questions at job orientation session?

tax questions at job orientation session?
I've just been offered a new job and I completed the orientation session today. During the session I had to give answers to automated questions on a phoneline. The questions were to do with tax benefits I think. It asked me things like: "Do you have a highschool diploma?" and "Are you a veteran from the armed forces?". What I want to know is do my answers to these questions make any difference to the taxes that I will be charged during my new job?

Jay:  Those two questions have nothing to do with taxes. The kinds of questions that affect taxes are: how many dependents do you have? How much do you want to withhold? How do you file (single, married, etc.)? These are to be asked via a W-4 form. The phone is not the appropriate place to ask such questions.

Bash Limpbutt's Oozing Cyst?:  Those questions have nothing to do with taxation. You should have filled out a Form W-4 and possibly a similar state form to tell your employer how much tax to withhold. Those questions are partly used for statistical purposes and possibly for credits for employing certain classes of people. Most of those credits are at the state level though occasionally there are some at the Federal level.

StephenWeinstein:  None of those questions have anything to do with taxes or tax benefits or make any difference to the taxes that you will be charged. Those questions are also normally asked before the job offer is made. If they are asking now, it suggests that they have not really decided whether to higher you.
