1099 Question - Mileage from a regular W-2 job to a 1099 job - deductible?

1099 Question - Mileage from a regular W-2 job to a 1099 job - deductible?
Hi, I have a regular W-2 job which I drive 50 miles to everyday and back - 100 miles all together. Recently, I have started a 1099 part-time job near my home that takes me 50 miles from my regular job to the 1099 job to get to. Can I deduct the 50 miles I drive to my 1099 job from my regular job as a tax deduction? Thanks.

card-ron:  If your W2 job is your main place of business, then yes you can claim the mileage from that job to your 1099 job as a business expense on Schedule C.

Bobbie:  Not the commuting expenses to you home but directly from one job site to the other job site in the same day. And then only if you are using the schedule A itemized deductions of the 1040 tax form as a part of your miscellaneous itemized deductions subject to the limited amount over 2% of your adjusted gross income amount and then the amount that is over the limited amount will be added to all of your other itemized deductions on the schedule A and will have to be more than your standard deduction amount before the amount would benefit you on your correctly completed 1040 federal income tax return. Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful to you in your situation and wishing you a happy thanks giving a couple of days ahead of time today is November 23 2010.

StephenWeinstein:  You can deduct mileage from one job to another job. If both jobs were W-2, you would deduct it on Schedule A as employee expenses. If both jobs are 1099, then you would deduct it on Schedule C or C-EZ as 1099 contractor expenses. I am not sure where you deduct it when one job is 1099 and one is W-2. Check this with the IRS (or ask it here) before you file.
