...that are not available to other industries?
Keep in mind before you answer that the oil and gas lobby rode you hard to get those credits.

thegubmint: Sure. Drop that 35% rate to 20 or 25% and watch that offshore money magically appear again.

Just over 20% of stocks are held by mutual funds another 20% by IRA's and private investors and another 20% by PENSION FUNDS you are attacking your precious UNIONS.
Across the board for big oil companies the holdings of the highest executives is less than 2% of stocks over 60% is held by funds and investors dummy.

u_bin_called: see, it's like this....
...until you can talk facts and not hate and envy, then there will be no progress....no matter how "progressive" you tell everyone you are...
what "breaks" and "credits" do you mean...the ones that encourage research into alternative energies and cleaner buring fuels?....the ones that help them off-set the punitive and profit-motivated "environmental" fees they must pay?
meanwhile, why no mention of controlling government waste on the State, Federal and Local level? In California, it was discovered that City of Bell employees were making hundreds of thousands of dollars for nothing....Could that be happening elsewhere? What effect is THAT having on our economy?
Finally, why don't we take control of the people who actually work for US before attacking the private sector that pumps trillions of $$ into the economy through wages and investment?

Graycon: Sure, oil companies are heavily tied to the government (government controls supply), the tax credits are efforts to try to get them to spend into new technology and to keep prices low. One could arguable remove those in hopes of letting free markets pick up the energy competition. There would be less counter active goals in a single entity with this method.

Texas Patriot: Please tell me what oil and tax credits you are talking about. The oil companies are using the tax codes to take deductions like all businesses do. If I recall the Democrats had control of the House and the Senate from 2006 and 2010 and two of those years they controlled the White House and was responsible for writing the tax codes. What did they do?

RitchWilliams: Sure, just as long as you're willing to pay higher gas and oil prices.
You see, unlike Democrats, Republican understand business and realize that when you add to the COST of doing business, you add to the PRICE of any goods or services that business sells...and that you buy.
Knock yourself out.

James B: with all the Loop holes we have the lowest corporate tax rate Now.Example If you offer Tuition reimbursement you get 10,000 per employee tax break and not per employee that goes to school for all the employees and the problem is only 2% use it so the company with 400 employees gets 4,000,000 just for that although only 8 return to school its a crock

Constitution Hawk: Undoubtedly yes. The top 5 oil companies made $36 billion in profits for 2010. Cutting their $2 billion subsidy/tax break will not have a drastic impact on their bottom line, and lowering their taxes will allow for gas prices to drop, thus good for us all.

TAT: Do we really want to raise the cost of doing business at this time? Do we really want that passed onto us? The government already makes more off of a gallon of gas than the oil companies. Do you know what happened last time we tried to screw them?
According to the energy research firm Wood Mackenzie, should taxes be increased on oil companies by $5 billion a year, that ?would result in a $128 billion loss in government revenue and would reduce domestic production by 400,000 barrels per day by 2025,? with an additional 1.2 million barrels per day at risk
Our own Congressional Research Service concluded that, ?[T]he proposals also would make oil and natural gas more expensive for U.S. consumers and likely increase foreign dependence.?
Between 1998 and 2008, the oil and gas industry paid $1 trillion in total income taxes. That?s in addition to the $178 billion the companies sent the federal government in rent, royalty and bonus payments between 1982 and 2009.? But the progs will still scream that they are still making record profits! The American Petroleum Institute reports, ?the oil and gas industry earned 6 cents for every dollar of sales in comparison with all manufacturing, which earned 8.6 cents for every dollar of sales.?
