W-2 and 1099 Form questions, please help.?
I have been looking for the answer to this question all morning. The question is displayed in my textbook and I cannot seem to find the answer! Please help:
Which statement is NOT true about the differences between the income on a W-2 and that on a 1099 form?
a) 1099 income is untaxed where the income on a W-2 is already taxed.
b) A 1099 form is for income other than wages
c) The income on a 1099 is money from interest, royalties, rents, and more.
d) The 1099 income ins not reported to the IRS while the W-2 income is reported.
Answers:
Bash Limpbutt's Oozing Cyst?: D is the only completely false statement. The IRS receives copies of all 1099s and W-2s.
A is weakly worded as all income is taxable unless explicitly exempted by law. While taxes *might* not be withheld on income reported on a 1099 there are plenty of cases where withholding is mandatory. An excellent example is Form 1099-R. Income reported on Form W-2 isn't "already taxed" though taxes usually have been withheld. FICA taxes are always withheld from W-2 wages (with rare exceptions) but income taxes may not be withheld depending upon taxpayer's situation.
B and C are both true.

Chosen Answer
Judy: Think about it. If someone sends you either a W-2 or a 1099, the info goes to the IRS also. Reread the choices - which one is incorrect?

Dave: "D" - obviously. The whole POINT of the 1099 form IS to report the payment to the IRS. That's why the 1099 exists.
